Chicken Ark Plans for Pecking Order Problems
Posted on Apr 27, 2009 under Keeping chickens |

These can easily be be made from chicken ark plans

Just so yah know, …
Just so yah know, most chickens don’t actually stay in trees if the have a coop they can go into. You should lock new chickens in the coop for the first few nights, but after that they will simply go into the coop themselves. My chickens are all aloud to roam a decent sized yard with a few trees, but at night, they always go back into the coop. You should let your hens out every once in a while, they love to forage, and its good for them!

Man, that brings …
Man, that brings back memories. When I was a “kid” we used to raise 100 to 150 Leghorns for egg sales and meat. I believe that you’ll find your egg production is tied more to the hens’ diet and breed than anything else. We used to gather between 65 (a bad day!) and 90 eggs per hundred. You can keep the flock young by simply letting a couple of hens set in the spring after the roosters have been “home”. We fed a 60% egg pellets and 40% chopped corn plus “semi-free” range.

Vincent, not sure …
Vincent, not sure if chickens keep predators away. I know someone who’s got a farm upstate NY and has lost his chickens to coyotes over the years atleast once. Those coyotes are pretty bold when it comes to prey.

chickens are nice …
chickens are nice pets easy to care for in my opinion. I always kept 6 hens (no rooster). average 3-4 eggs a day. A covered area for scratching, dust bathe (fenced from predators), a lower level to feed hanging container for pellets and i use a coffee can with lightbulb inside to keep water from freezing an upper level with perch for roosting, and a couple laying boxes. I would take them fresh water daily, throw some corn scratch and collect eggs. in summer they roam the yard eat bugs, fertalize

Rabbits are good to …
Rabbits are good to look into, too. No eggs, but the meat is good and butchering a rabbit is easier than a chicken, at least it seems that way to me. They need less space too. Also, in some third world countries, poor people raise guinea pigs indoors for meat.
